Duas

The One Dua Every Muslim Kid Needs to Know

Dear MuslimKids,

Assalamualaikum!

We have been taught SO many wonderful duas from the Quran and the sunnah of our Prophet (ﷺ). Today, we will be talking about one very, very special dua that includes everything we could ever want from this world AND the next.

First up, the dua:

 رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Next, it’s translation:

“Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!”

Where is the dua from?

In the Quran, there are 40 duas that begin with Rabbana and this is one of them. This dua is Ayah 201 from Surah Baqarah.

Why did Allah (ﷻ) reveal it?

In the previous ayah, Allah (ﷻ) talks about people who only ask and work for good in THIS world. They do not work for the hereafter, nor do they ask Allah (ﷻ) for any good in it.

Then Allah (ﷻ) reveals that on the other hand, there are people who ask for and work for good in both worlds. And of course, they are the ones who are more successful.

Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good…

The beauty of this dua is that it includes EVERYTHING that is good for us. So if you read this dua thinking about your next chicken burger meal and if it’s good for you, you’ll get it! If you read it thinking about a good grade in your next test, you’ll get it! And if you read it not really thinking about something in particular, you will still get all the good that has been written for you simply because you asked Allah (ﷻ) for it!

…and in the Hereafter that which is good

Some out of the MANY things that can be good in the hereafter:

  • Getting into Jannah
  • Meeting all the prophets (a)
  • Being reunited with our family and friends
  • And most importantly, meeting Allah (ﷻ).

The companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “Do you have any doubts about seeing the full moon on a cloudless night?” They said, “No.” So, the Prophet said, “Do you have any doubts about seeing the sun on a cloudless day?” They said, “No.” Finally, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Then you will see your Lord in the same way.”

…and save us from the torment of the Fire!

Once, the Prophet (ﷺ) visited a man who was so sick, he had become as weak as a small, sick bird. The Prophet (ﷺ) visited him and asked if he had made dua for something. The man replied that he had asked Allah (ﷻ)  to give him all the punishment that was meant for him in the hereafter in this life.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “All praise is due to Allah! You cannot or stand it. You should have said: Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!

The torment of the Fire is so great, we should be constantly asking Allah (ﷻ) to save us from it.

When should we read it?

  • In the morning, after Fajr.
  • In the evening, after Maghrib.
  • In our salah, during the final sitting as this is a sunnah!

May Allah make it easy for us to read this dua!

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
